FACT CHECK: Chris Christie Flat-Out LIED About Hillary Clinton’s Foreign Policy Record

Last night, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is a former U.S. Attorney, attempted to lay out the “case” against Hillary Clinton on the issue of foreign policy. What’s so odd about that is the fact that Christie has absolutely zero experience when it comes to foreign policy, and might not even be able to locate Malta on a map.

Clinton, Christie boomed, was “guilty!” for a laundry list of foreign policy failures. And while one may disagree with the positions Clinton has taken over the years, Christie was flat-out lying through his teeth. Here’s a closer look at some specific examples of his fabrications, which now seem to be the hallmark of anyone connected with the Trump for President campaign:

Libya

According to Christie, Clinton was “the chief engineer of the disastrous overthrow” of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. This, Christie continued, was why ISIS has set up an operation in Libya.

The Truth: Clinton was by no means the “chief engineer” of the intervention in Libya, and while it may not have turned out the way everyone wished, is anyone truly going to cry over the fact that Gaddafi is dead?

While Clinton did agree with the military action taken in Libya, Christie makes it sound as if her vote was the deciding one. It wasn’t.

Syria

Christie assailed Clinton for calling “[Syrian] President [Bashar] Assad a reformer” and “a different kind of leader.” He then went on to add that the Syrian civil war has left 400,000 dead “at the hands of the man Hillary defended.” This, Christie said, means Clinton is “an awful judge of the character of a dictator and a butcher in the Middle East.”

The Truth: In a March 27, 2011 appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” as the Syrian uprising was beginning, Clinton remarked:

“There is a different leader in Syria now. Many of the members of Congress of both parties who have gone to Syria in recent months have said they believe he’s a reformer.”

Clinton didn’t say Assad was a reformer, she said members of Congress had informed her that he was one. Big difference.

Iran

Like any Republican you ask, Christie was opposed to the Iran nuclear deal and would have preferred we start bombing without any good intelligence of where the nuclear facilities were located.

Christie harshly criticized Clinton over the Iran deal, saying that she had “launched negotiations” with Tehran, “helped cut” the deal, and was “the biggest cheerleader for the agreement in the end.”

The Truth: Clinton had already left the Administration when the deal was “cut” over between the U.S. and Tehran from November 2013 to July 2013. That work was conducted by Secretary of State John Kerry and his State Department deputies.

As for Clinton being the deal’s “biggest cheerleader,” that’s also complete bullshit. The person most eager to get the deal was John Kerry. On several occasions, Clinton expressed the opinion that the deal involved “risk.”

So, clearly, Chris Christie stood up and lied like a rug so he could try and slag the presumptive Democratic candidate. While Republicans love to say that Clinton isn’t trustworthy, it turns out they are merely projecting their own weaknesses onto her for the purpose of hijacking this country and leading it down the path of fascism.
