If we learn only one thing from the 2016 U.S. Presidential campaign, it’s this: Donald Trump (R-N.Y.) is no fan of the Federal Judicial System, and the Federal Judicial System is no fan of Donald Trump.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, discussed the Republican nominee during an interview on CNN with Legal Analyst Joan Biskupic this week. The outspoken, quick-witted Justice Ginsburg said of Trump:
“He is a faker … He has no consistency about him. He says whatever comes into his head at the moment. He really has an ego.”
Justice Ginsburg went on to point out that:
“Every other presidential candidate has turned over tax returns … How has he gotten away with not turning over his tax returns? The press seems to be very gentle with him on that.”
Donald Trump, in very Trump-ian fashion, fired back on Twitter. His remarks did not simply denounce Justice Ginsburg’s comments but went beyond the pale, as only Trump can, in insulting the highly respected sitting Justice.
Mr Trump said in a tweet:
Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!

Disrespectful rhetoric aimed at U.S. Jurists is a apparently a pastime of Trump. Earlier in the year, while on the campaign trail, Trump railed against a Mexican-American Federal Judge, who was born in Indiana. The allegation by the Republican nominee was that Federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel had treated him “unfairly” because of his Mexican heritage.
The odious allegation of a well-respected judge earned The Donald the black mark of being overtly racist, and of undermining the sanctity of the U.S. Judicial System. This negative perception of Trump was one shared among even the highest ranking members of the Republican Party.
Likewise, it is not the first time Justice Ginsburg has cut into the Republican candidate for President. In a previous interview, when asked about the chance of Trump presidency, she said simply,
“I don’t want to think about that possibility.”
Later in the same discussion when pressed on the topic of appointing a new justice to the supreme court, Ginsburg said:
“It’s likely that the next president, whoever she will be, will have a few appointments to make.”
You can say what you want about Ruth Bader Ginsburg; but what is clear is her wry and adept ability to judge the current election cycle… It’s participants, too.
