Based on the number of Republicans who have already said they will not be attending this year’s GOP convention, you have to wonder if they’ll even be able to fill the hall or find enough speakers to complete the schedule of events.
One of the most stinging rebukes came this week from Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, who has been extremely critical of presumptive nominee Donald Trump since he entered the race in June of 2015. Sasse’s spokesperson told the Hill that the Senator would not be at the convention in Cleveland, and then spelled out the reason why:
“Sen. Sasse will not be attending the convention and will instead take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state, all of which enjoy more popularity than the current front-runner.”
Ouch! That’s gotta sting, Donald!
It was reported that at a meeting Trump held this week with Republican members of Congress, the Orange Menace singled out Sasse for his criticisms and told him:
“You must want Hillary.”
Sasse has also posted an open letter on Facebook in which he says of Trump:
“Mr. Trump’s relentless focus is on dividing Americans, and on tearing down rather than building back up this glorious nation.
“So let me ask you: Do you believe the beating heart of Mr. Trump’s candidacy has been a defense of the Constitution? Do you believe it’s been an impassioned defense of the First Amendment – or an attack on it?
“While I recognize that we disagree about how to make America great again, we agree that this should be our goal. We need more people engaged in the civic life of our country—not fewer. I genuinely appreciate how much many of you care about this country, and that you are demanding something different from Washington. I’m going to keep doing the same thing.
“But I can’t support Donald Trump.”
So instead of a Trumpster fire, Sasse will be enjoying the warm embers of a few dumpster fires around the state of Nebraska with his family.
Donald, you just got rebuked in the most insulting way imaginable.
