A man claiming to be Mateen’s lover said that he was, “100-percent gay.” He said this in an interview with Univision:

“I’ve cried like you have no idea. But the thing that makes me want to tell the truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion he did it for revenge.

When asked why he is speaking out, he said:

“It’s my responsibility as a citizen of the United States and a gay man.”

The man wore a disguise and would only be identified as “Miguel.” He said that Mateen’s attack was motivated by a sexual encounter with two Latino men. He found out after the fact that one of the men is HIV positive.

Miguel said that the attack, which was carried out during “Latin Night” at Pulse, was revenge against the Latino gay community for his HIV scare.

Miguel said:

“He adored Latinos, gay Latinos, with brown skin, but he felt rejected. He felt used by them. There were moments in the Pulse nightclub that made him feel really bad. Guys used him. That really affected him. I believe this crazy horrible thing he did, that was revenge.”

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said investigators are looking into Mateen’s contacts from the months leading up to the attack. Here is what she said on the subject:

“We stand with you to say that the good in this world far outweighs the evil, that our common humanity transcends our differences, and that our most effective response to terror and to hatred is compassion, it’s unity, and it’s love. We stand with you today as we grieve together, and long after the cameras are gone, we will continue to stand with you as we grow together in commitment, in solidarity, and in equality.”
