Weird Pic Of The Day: Fish Stuck In Jellyfish Regrets Everything

Photographer Tim Samuel and videographer Franny Plumridge took this fascinating picture off Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia. Although the fish does have a “WTF?!” look on its face, it was not being eaten.

The fish in this instance was hiding inside of the jellyfish. It was very much alive, and its tail was still moving. Some fish will hide inside of another animal in this manner. Samuel had this to say about what was going on in the photo:

“I was pretty fascinated by how the fish controlled the jellyfishes movement, propelling it forward and often spinning in circles.”

He continued:

“The conditions were crystal clear that day, which is why we able to spot the little pair in the first place. The jellyfish was only a couple inches long making the duo an easy miss for sure. We stuck around for about 20 minutes and then left the couple to their own devices. I thought about setting the fish free as we swam off – but figured it was best to just let nature run its course.”

The photo was actually taken in December, but it didn’t go viral until it was reposted this week by DiscoverOcean. Samuel posted it on Reddit as well, and it made the trending list twice.

Samuel had never seen anything like it during his long years of photographing ocean life. Samuel and Plumridge watched the duo for a good 20 minutes. The fish/jellyfish duo swam in circles. The fish knocked the jellyfish off balance a couple of times.

Here’s a reaction from Twitter:

After taking this stunning photo Samuel and Plumridge went on to photograph turtles in the ocean. The area is a marine park protected from fishing, so fish life is thriving in the area.
