Congressman Tells Trump Where His Wall Can Go

U.S. Congressman from Texas, Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville had words for Donald Trump.

“Mr. Trump, you’re a racist and you can take your border wall and shove it up your ass.”

In an open letter, Vela takes on Trump’s take on the wall, his recent comments on a judge of Mexican descent, and Mexicans in general.

Vela said he does wish he could have used more diplomatic language, but he felt like he needed to speak to Trump in a way he was sure he could understand.

Vela begins the letter by sharing the issues on which he agrees with Trump, but he quickly makes a distinction.

“There might even be a few other things on which we can agree,” Vela wrote. “However, your ignorant anti-immigrant opinions, your border wall rhetoric, and your recent bigoted attack on an American jurist are just plain despicable.”

Rep. Vela, a lawyer by training, has served in the House of Representatives since 2012. He is an advocate of immigrant rights before and since arriving in congress. His district includes southern Texas, close to the Mexican boder. Vela has a deep interest in immigrant rights.

He also serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and subcommittees on Border and Maritime Security and Counterterrorism and Intelligence. He is the co-chair of the Congressional Border Caucus, which works to reform immigration laws.

Vela said he felt like he had to say something.

“This last week when I was home I run into constituents on the streets and Trump’s rhetoric is making them really upset that they are looking for someone to speak out for them,” Vela said.

In comments in his hometown paper, The Brownsville Herald, reactions were mixed. Some decried the congressman as “obscene” for the language used in the letter, while others applauded Vela for speaking out.

There has been no response from the Trump campaign thus far.
