We already know that many conservatives are shaky when it comes to understanding science. For example, a lot of them are convinced that climate change isn’t real.
Now RawStory reports that at least one of them is doubtful about evolution, too.
Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh suggested this week that evolution is a hoax. Like climate change. Just something made up by those no-good scientists.
And what is Rush’s evidence?
The fact that Harambe, the gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo, never became a human.
Yup. He actually said that. On the air. On his show. Which proves the intellectual level of his listeners.
On his radio show the other day, Limbaugh was pontificating about members of PETA, who oppose the capture and killing of animals. He suggested that they spend more time reading the Bible, so that they’d understand the complex relationship between humans and animals:
“There’s no way human beings are going to not be interested in animals. Gawking at them. Out on safari, hunting them.”
He neglected to mention that one could go on safari to gawk at animals, or that one could be armed only with a camera on a safari trip.
Limbaugh had more to say about the topic of humans and animals. The members of PETA, he said, have clearly not read Genesis, the first book of the Bible, which explains the Judeo-Christian creation story. Rush Limbaugh is all about that Adam and Eve thing. Evolution, though? Not so much.
“A lot of people think that all of us used to be apes. Don’t doubt me on this. A lot of people think that all of us used to be gorillas.”
Perhaps some of his listeners were surprised to hear this, but the majority of people, including the Pope, do believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution.
So what is Rush’s evidence for disbelieving the theory? Get ready. He said:
“If we were the original apes, then how come Harambe is still an ape? And how come he didn’t become one of us?”
How do you argue with this kind of “thinking?”
