Democrats Devising A Plan For Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Exit (VIDEO)

Democrats in favor of both the Clinton and Sanders Campaigns considered this past week whether and how Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, should step down before the convention in July.

Legislators who back former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton worry she has been too divisive to unify the party, which they insist is needed before a presidential race with GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump this fall.

Supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) claim Rep. Shultz has been openly dismissive and sometimes hostile to the senator’s bid for the Democratic nomination. A pro-Clinton lawmaker who requested anonymity told The Hill:

I don’t see how she can continue to the election. How can she open the convention? Sanders supporters would go nuts.”

It does not appear that she has given any thought to stepping down on her own. According to The Hill:

Senate sources stress that a final decision won’t be made until Clinton and Sanders negotiate some type of deal aimed at healing the party. President Obama, who selected Wasserman Schultz as chairwoman in 2011, is expected to play a major role in any such talks.”

The two campaigns have already moved to limit her participation in the convention’s platform committee, but they say her removal is needed to keep young liberals and other Democrats part of the party to strengthen its position in the fall.

A Democratic senator who supports Clinton said:

We need to get this figured out and come together … Hillary’s got the nomination. She needs Bernie’s energy. It’s time for her to accommodate. It’s time to pick hard-nosed people to cut through things and figure out a deal … [Young liberals] need to know this is their party.”
