This week during an “Overtime” internet segment for the Fox News show “Outnumbered,” co-host Dagen McDowell and her fellow Obama haters started whining about the president’s trip to Hiroshima, Japan on what they labeled as Obama’s “apology tour.”
McDowell kicked off the Obama bashing session, saying:
“In journalism, we all know this, there’s always the last question you ask is, why now? Why is he doing it now? Secretary Kerry already went there. It’s not a major anniversary. Why is he going there? And I’m reading into it, but I always get the feeling that he’s somehow ashamed of the United States.”
For a second her co-host, Harris Faulkner plays good cop by asking McDowell, “What would lead you to believe that?” McDowell replies:
“Again, I feel like he’s constantly apologizing. I mean, his entire foreign policy has been one of extraction and creating vacuums, of trying to remove the United States from the world stage.”
Faulker eagerly shuffled to join her comrades. She interjects sarcastically, “Except for Iran! We did such a deal with Iran. We even did side deals!”
Meghan McCain decides to join in on the Obama-bashing orgy, stating:
“I would go as far back as when Michelle Obama said that the only time she was proud of her country was when her husband was the nominee for president,” McCain said.
McCain earned an extra doggie biscuit for bringing up the widely misquoted statement from Michelle Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign. However, when read or listening to in full context, the first lady’s comments were not said in the prophetic anti-American tone that dishonest conservatives want people to believe they were. Michelle Obama really said this:
Hope is making a comeback. … For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment.
What the Fox puppets also failed to mention is that on August 6, 1945, the bombing of Nagasaki killed between 39,000 – 80,000 men, women, and children. On the same day, Hiroshima suffered casualties ranging from 90,000 to 146,000. There’s also the issue of the generations of health problems the survivors and their families suffer due to the radiation from the bombs.
Whether it was right or wrong for President Harry Truman to drop the bombs is aside from the point. For a sitting U.S. President to travel to one or both of those cities and show recognition of the pain that infamous decision caused the people of Japan doesn’t make the U.S. look weak, it does the exact opposite.
