Filmmaker Michael Langer is completing his documentary, “Godless: The Truth Beyond Belief” to help illustrate how tough life as an atheist can be. It looks at the stigma atheists face from believers and the responses to it. Langer has set up a GoFundMe page to get the film, “Godless,” finished. He has a good chunk of it done, but needs money for editing and post-production.
This film will investigate the reality of being an atheist amongst believers. The misconceptions, prejudice, and general hate can tear apart people and their families. In the scariest of cases, atheists can be killed for not believing in any gods.
Many people in politics associate atheists with communists. People need to get rid of the stereotype that all atheists are bad. Morals and religion are not intrinsically connected.
There is so much stigma around the term “atheist” that many people use different words. They say things like agnostic, secular, humanism, and others. Langer wants to bring these kinds of issues to the surface. Many atheists feel intimidated, alienated, and insecure by the believers.
In 2015, the American blogger Avijit Roy was murdered while reporting in Bangladesh. Bangladesh isn’t even one of the countries that sentence atheists to death.
Langer has about one-third of the footage he needs. He is trying to raise money to:
- Conduct new rounds of interviews in America
- Shoot live segments, in which people react to secular messages, for example.
- Shoot in different countries to compare the situation of atheists and tell their stories
- Do Post-production
- Launch Marketing, Promotion, and Distribution
Also, on the IndieGoGo page, he lists the countries in which he would like to film. He wants to go to the U.K. since they are actually a Christian nation. They see the Church of England and the queen as their ruler. So, it will be interesting to see how atheists are treated there.
He also says he chose IndieGoGo so that everyone around the world that has been persecuted can contribute. It will get to the many Millennials that are abandoning religion. This kind of film needs to be made, and I can’t wait to watch it.
