Whoa.
If you thought Ted Cruz was a nasty S.O.B., wait until you read about the group of crazy right-wing bigots that have endorsed him for President.
Mother Jones ran an article today listing some of the people who have come out in support of Cruz in recent weeks. Its a truly frightening look into the kind of people who are drawn to this dangerous man.
Every one of the people listed is prominent and well known. Every one of them is vocally opposed to equal rights for anybody who basically isn’t a white born-again conservative Christian.
Let’s start with the Benham family. Twin brothers Jason and David Benham are advisors to the Cruz campaign’s “Religious Liberty Advisory Council.” They have actively fought against marriage equality, gay pride parades and the rights of LGBT people to use the bathroom of their choice. Nice folks, huh?
Next, we have the anti-women’s rights gang. These include a person named Troy Newman, who once wrote a book in which he called for the U.S. government to fulfill its duty to execute “convicted murderers, including abortionists, for their crimes.” That’s right. This member of the “Pro-Lifers for Cruz” group wants to kill doctors for doing their jobs, and he doesn’t even see the irony in that.
But Newman is not alone in his pro-death positions. Oh, no. Cruz is also backed by Pastor Kevin Swanson, who insists that the Bible calls for the execution of homosexuals. But don’t worry: he says that they should be killed only after they have had time to repent of their sins. Seriously, he said that.
Next we have Tony Perkins, the head of the “Family Research Council,” which has been designated as an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Perkins has been connected with the KKK and other white-supremacist groups. He spreads the lie that gay men are more prone than straight to be pedophiles, an idea which has been refuted by psychological studies.
There is also James Dobson, the founder and leader of “Focus on the Family.” This man provides advice to parents through his books, films, tapes and website. He’s a real sweet guy; he blamed the shootings at Sandy Hook elementary school on the legalization of abortion and same sex marriage. He endorsed forced reversion therapy to turn gay people straight.
Let me repeat: these are all Cruz supporters.
Just in case you aren’t yet convinced that the Cruz campaign is dangerous and crazy, get this:
Ted Cruz was endorsed by Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty. Why? Because he’s “Godly” and he’ll “shoot a duck and put it in the pot.”
You can’t make this stuff up.
