Parents Go After Lone Transgender Supporter At A School Board Meeting In An Odd Way (VIDEO)

A school in South Carolina is trying to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity. Over 500 parents showed up to this school board meeting. Some of them were holding up signs with phrases such as “It’s common sense!” and “Keep kids safe!”

Just like many other transphobic conservatives that are making a big deal about bathrooms, these parents are treating transgender students as if they are perpetrators of some non-existent crime.

One lone parent, Melanie Moore, was the only one in the room practicing reason. She was trying to defend transgender students:

“[She] argued that transgender people should not be lumped into the same category as pedophiles, rapists or other criminals. She also tried to explain how transgender students are born one sex, but feel as though they should have been born the opposite gender – though she was shouted over by many members of the crowd.”

She also said:

“Everybody is concerned about their children. The transgender parents are concerned about their children too, so I thought it was important that somebody stand up for them.”

The anti-trans parents started singing a hymn, “Jesus Loves Me,” to drown her out.

These conservative parents want to take away rights from teenagers, and they will not even listen to any opposition. Everyone deserves their right to freedom of speech. It is rude and disrespectful to shout over someone just because they are disagreeing with you.

This just makes me picture a child with their fingers in their ears, yelling “la la la…I can’t hear you!” They may think they are doing the right thing by singing a hymn, but it is really the same tactic. They obviously must not have a real, logical reason to oppose the measure. What should have been a logical discussion turned into an attack on one person and her opinions.

One parent disgustingly says that God didn’t create transgender kids that way, he implied that there is something wrong with these kids. They experience enough discrimination; they shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of hate just for going to the bathroom.

The school is following the Title IX measure and allowing students to use the restrooms corresponding to their gender identity, but many of the parents still don’t like it.
