Michael Lloyd Merichko thought it would be a good idea to march into his local Target store and stage what he called a “protest” over the store’s recently implemented bathroom policy which says customers are welcome to use whatever restroom they feel most comfortable with. As a result, Merichko was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
According to authorities, Merichko had visited the Target in Bradley, Illinois on several occasions prior to Monday’s arrest “to ask the question” regarding the policy.
On April 25, Merichko posted a video on YouTube in which he said he had asked an employee at Target about the open bathroom, policy, claiming that his concern was:
“Some wicked pervert in the same bathroom as my wife or my daughter who ‘self-identifies’ at that time as a woman.”
One day after posting the video, Merichko returned to the same Target store and police were called by store management. When police arrived, Merichko told an officer he would “go stand guard” if his wife or daughter needed to use the womens’ bathroom located in the store. Officers also noted that Merichko told them:
“This Bible that I read 110 percent disagrees with that so-called law. It’s against His law.”
In recent weeks, Merichko also posted this on his Facebook page:
Clearly, Mr. Merichko needs to get a life and stop worrying about who is using what bathroom. If he’s that frightened of those who are different from him, perhaps he should stay home and guard the door to this own bathroom.
