Target made the news this week when they said they will allow transgendered people to go to the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Fundies lost their sh*t, saying they will boycott the store because of it.
Target said in their statement:
“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”
The American Family Association said in their petition statement:
“Clearly, Target’s dangerous new policy poses a danger to wives and daughters. We think many customers will agree. And we think the average Target customer is willing to pledge to boycott Target stores until it makes protecting women and children a priority.”
So, you want to boycott, Target? Fine. But there are a few other companies that you should boycott as well.
The Human Rights Campaign puts out a survey called the Corporate Equality Index that measures which companies support LGBT equality. Over 400 businesses scored a 100 on the survey.
So, if you REALLY want to oppose transgender rights and use #BoycottTarget, you will need to get off of Facebook.
Facebook obviously supports LGBT rights. They put out a plugin to put a rainbow over your profile picture on the day of the marriage equality SCOTUS ruling in June.
Twitter also supports LGBT rights. They recently started a campaign to combat homophobia on Twitter.
If you REALLY want to keep your money from going to pro-equality companies, you need to return your iPhone. You also need to stop eating your Egg McMuffins. Do you have prescriptions to fill? If you do, you need to go to RiteAid. CVS and Walgreens both scored very well on the survey.
Wanting a caffeine pick-me-up? Can’t enjoy that Starbucks caramel macchiato; their CEO has been outspoken about their support for equal rights and benefits for same-sex couples, shutting down all the detractors (see badass video below).
You should really get your money out of the banks as well: Citibank, Chase, Bank of America, and others. There are countless companies that are pro-LGBT. So, you Republicans will have to shop locally without your iPods and iPhones and many products.
