Clinton Campaign Takes Back March Goal, Aims for April

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton’s campaign had planned to overtake Democratic rival Bernie Sanders in March. Now, however, this goal has been pushed back to April.

Notably, the Clinton campaign is preparing to dedicate unforeseen funds and attention to the New York primary election on April 19. The spending for New York is going to exceed the original campaign budget, said certain informants to CNN. Even so, Clinton still leads in New York polls, scoring 54% to Sanders’s 42%.

Clinton’s first television ad appeared on New York televisions yesterday. It focuses on the diversity of the state and presents her as the correct choice for the Democratic nominee:

“When we pull together, we do the biggest things in the world.”

Clinton’s movement to take New York began earlier this month, when she sent two aides to the state to direct her operation there. Her strategy seems to be appealing to Democratic areas of New York, including Rochester, Albany, and Syracruse. Though her campaign has its headquarters in Brooklyn, and though she represented New York for eight years, her campaign is carefully refraining from becoming too arrogant.

Just yesterday, she held a rally in the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. There, she emphasized her dedication to appealing to even current supporters:

“I am not taking anything or anyone for granted. We are going to work for every vote in every part of this state, just like I did when I ran for the Senate, because New Yorkers took a chance on me and I will never forget that.”

Clinton has an advantage over Sanders in New York, which will help her achieve her goal, because it holds a closed primary election; only registered Democrats can vote for Democratic candidates. Clinton has tended to succeed in states with closed primaries.

Clinton and Sanders both will hold rallies in New York; Clinton in Purchase and Sanders in the South Bronx.
