The Great Immigration Debate Of 1621 — Spoiler Alert: Not Much Has Changed

With the battle for the Presidency, continuing to rage, immigration is still a hot topic on both sides of the political spectrum. After all, we hear about mega-sized walls that will curtail the illegal floods from Mexico. We then hear about how the immigrant parents of many candidates came to this country with no money and only a small grasp of the English language. With this in mind, how can the sons of immigrants propose to keep other immigrants out? Sighs.

For the same reason that the pilgrims and other Europeans left their countries to settle in America – countless immigrants hope for a better and safer life in the U.S. The current “crisis” even mirrors “The Great Immigration Debate of 1621.” This is actually the premise of an insightful and informative video, which truly captures how many Native Americans felt when the Europeans hordes invaded their lands nearly 400 years ago.

While comedic in nature, the video has definitely touched many a nerve across the nation – if not the world. The only difference is that the roles are reversed – with the Native Americans pondering whether they should allow the Europeans to settle on their lands and claimed properties. The candidates should really see this video before opening their mouths about immigrants taking jobs – not speaking English – and not adopting or adapting to “American” ways.

With the general election rapidly approaching, many Americans have sadly sided with Donald Trump’s xenophobic and anti-immigration platforms. While many feel this is simply the way most Americans feel – the fact is that the majority are simply lashing out at President Obama’s “failed” policies. I mean record-low gas prices, affordable health care coverage, and massive job growths are all signs of failure? Are they not?

No matter which side of the ballot ticket you are on this November – always remember that this was, is, and will forever be a land of immigrants. The only non-immigrants are the Native Americans who laid claim to this fine land centuries ago. Sadly, the new debate stemming from the GOP side is that even the Natives are not true Natives – because they too came from Siberia, China, and other Asian centers thousands of years ago. Where do you stand on this topic of debate that will continue to separate the nation for Presidencies to come?
