Some people never cease to amaze me. For example, when you ask just about any Republican about 9/11 and who is to blame for the attack on that fateful day. Yes, Al Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, carried out the attack, but can we truly exonerate the Bush Administration for their failure to take the threat seriously? I can’t, but each person has to make their own conclusion based on the facts.
Facts are something that Marco Rubio is not very familiar with. Marco Roboto was on “Meet the Press” earlier, and he repeated something he had said at last night’s GOP debate in South Carolina: Bill Clinton was responsible for 9/11.
Yeah, talk about your WTF?! moments.
Here’s Cruz at the debate, telling the Clinton lie:
Note that he also said George W. Bush kept us safe. Was that before or after, while on his watch as Commander-In-Chief, over 3,000 people were killed in the most catastrophic terrorist attack ever on American soil?
Here’s Rubio’s deeply flawed (and politically calculated) reasoning, in his own words, as he told Chuck Todd. Todd asked Rubio this simple question as a follow-up to last night’s debate:
“So I’m actually still not quite clear. Are you putting 9/11 on Bill Clinton?”
To which Rubio the mechanical man replied:
“No, I’m putting it on his decision not to take out bin Laden, absolutely. This is what happens when you have a chance to take out the leader of a terrorist organization, and you failed to do so. And the results are something like 9/11.”
So because President Clinton didn’t manage to kill bin Laden (neither did Bush), the whole deal is his fault? Wow! I guess that means that FDR was responsible for the rise of Hitler and the attack on Pearl Harbor, another fiction the far right has been spewing out for years.
What I cannot help but notice is missing from Rubio’s response is this important fact: President Obama did take out Osama bin Laden. Where’s the credit for that, Marco? Oh, I know: You can’t praise Obama because that might hurt your standing in the polls or your fundraising efforts.
Rubio is trying to set up a pivot point: Blame Bill Clinton for 9/11 and then by extension you can try to blame Hillary Clinton because she was First Lady at the time.
Nice try, Marco, but we ain’t buying it. 9/11 belongs to Bush and Cheney, and history will record it that way, not the way you want it to.
