There’s an old maxim we’ve all heard: What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. And a legislator in Kentucky says she thinks it’s about time that maxim was applied to her male colleagues.

Democratic state Representative Mary Lou Marzian says she is tired of male legislators in her state making it more and more difficult for women in Kentucky to control their reproductive health and make decisions regarding abortion, so she has introduced Bill 396. This piece of legislation would require that men get permission from their wives and then present that note to their doctor in order to receive a prescription for Viagra, a well-known drug which helps men get and maintain erections.

But wait, Bill 396 goes one step further. It also mandates that the men seeking Viagra put their hand on a Bible at their doctor’s office and swear an oath that they are indeed married and only using the drug for the purpose of having sex exclusively with their wives.

Marzian said she introduced the legislation for the purpose of protecting male Kentuckians:

“I want to protect these men from themselves. This is about family values.”

This isn’t the first time a female state legislator has tried to turn the tables on the male lawmakers in her state. In 2012, Ohio state Senator Nina Turner introduced a bill which also dealt with the issue of Viagra. Turner’s bill would have required men to visit a sex therapist, undergo a cardiac stress test, and then have their sexual partner to sign a notarized affidavit which confirmed they were impotent before they were able to get a prescription for Viagra.

Marzian also said her bill is a way of making male legislators ask themselves a very important question:

“Do we really want a bunch or legislators interfering in private, personal, medical decisions?”
