President Obama has been careful not to say who he favors in the 2016 Democratic race, but Jay Carney, his former press secretary, said on CNN yesterday that he has a good idea who the President would prefer to have as his successor. Carney told CNN host Brooke Baldwin:

“I don’t think there is any doubt that he wants Hillary to win the nomination and believes that she would be the best candidate in the fall and the most effective as president in carrying forward what he’s achieved.

“I think the President has signaled, while still remaining neutral, that he supports Secretary Clinton’s candidacy and would prefer to see her as the nominee. He won’t officially embrace her unless and until it’s clear that she’s going to be the nominee. I think he is maintaining that tradition of not intervening in a party primary.”

This is not exactly surprising news when you consider that Clinton served as Secretary of State during the President’s first term in office. Also, it’s likely that President Obama thinks Clinton has a better shot of winning in November against whoever the Republican nominee turns out to be.

I’m glad President Obama hasn’t formally announced who he supports at this stage of the race. To do so could actually hinder the process and influence undecided voters. There is still plenty of time left in the primary calendar for Democrats to make their choice for November clear.

And one thing is certain: Clinton or Sanders would certainly be preferable to any of turkeys riding in the GOP clown car.
