’He Thinks It’s An Easy-Peasy Job’ – Kids Give Their Impressions Of Presidential Candidates

The Washington Post invited a group of 6-8 years old kids last week to give their opinions of presidential candidates Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump. The children watched short clips of the candidate’s speeches together, before sharing their thoughts.

First up was Bernie Sanders. “He sounds like he’s angry” and “I’m guessing he has a lot of ties,” were the kid’s first impressions, followed by “I think his teeth are real clean”.

“I think he wants to get more people arrested since he talked about building more jails” was one little girl’s understanding of Sanders’ speech about America having more people in jail than any other country on earth. When corrected by the moderator that he’d meant the opposite, the little girl concluded that then “he likes criminals, since he talked about building less jails, and I’m guessing he likes Sesame Street.”

Next up was Hillary Clinton. “She’s really pretty” said one kid, while another didn’t think she’d be a good candidate because she spoke about her granddaughter, and what does the presidency have to do with being a grandmother?

“I know they caught her husband messing with another girl” said one kid, and another girl followed with “no offense to boys, but there has been too much men presidents and I think this will be a very good change”.

“Oh no” said the kids when it was time to watch Trump, and “he looks like a tomato”. But when Trump called people stupid, the kids showed better manners than him, and made disapproving faces.

“I don’t know why he said to put up a wall for,” pondered one girl. One of the boys explained matter-of-factly that Trump believes Mexicans are bringing drugs into the country. “Donald Trump doesn’t like black people,” continued the girl, who was African-American, and there was some different opinions if he did or not. The boy concluded that “he doesn’t like Latinos”, which made all three boys acknowledge, one after the other, that “I’m Latino…”

Conclusion? “I think he thinks it’s just an easy peasy job, I think he wants attention.”
