I get asked all the time how someone who is intelligent, who has college degrees, life experience, and liberal philosophies, can possibly still be religious. I’m told that God is just ancient superstition, the Bible is a work of fiction, and only the simple-minded still subscribe to the fairy tales of faith and religion. How can you believe in the Bible when faced with the science of today?
Well, that is the point, isn’t it? To believe in something bigger than yourself, something unseen, you have to have faith. And in today’s world, it’s hard to have faith in anything.
I believe in freedom of religion, including your right to not have any religion at all.
I avoid the news now. It has become almost painful to scroll through the repeating stories of violence, hatred, and ignorance. What is happening to us? What will save us? In the midst of all the propaganda, lies, violence and selfishness, what is there to believe in anymore?
We need to believe in something which comforts us, gives us hope, fosters a sense of belonging, and inspires within us a burning desire to love and reach out to our fellow man. As for me, I find those things most clearly in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
I hope that each of you have that something to believe in, and that together, we can be inspired to rise up and proclaim peace, joy, and love back into our world.
