I am not misleading you when I say that Bernie Sanders told the real takers of government assistance that they must get off of welfare.
During a campaign stop in Des Moines, Iowa this past Saturday, Bernie sent a personal message to the Walton family, the owners of Walmart:
“Get off of welfare! Start paying your workers a living wage.”
According to Bernie, the Walton family is the wealthiest family in the United States. Given that their net worth is $149 billion, Bernie states that they:
“own more wealth alone than the bottom 40% of the American people.”
Despite their billion-dollar empire, Bernie points out that the Waltons and Walmart are actually “major beneficiar[ies] of welfare.”
Although Walmart increased the minimum wages of their employees over the last year, the raises of merely $9 to $10 an hour are simply not enough.
Bernie points out that many Walmart workers are still on Medicaid, foodstamps, and live in government subsidized housing. Employees would not need to collect any welfare benefits if Walmart just provided a living wage.
