4 Striking Similarities Between Arrested Development And The GOP Presidential Candidates

Arrested Development is a comedy series that ran on Fox for three seasons beginning in 2003. Since the show was cancelled in 2006, Netflix has taken over the show with plans to air a second Netflix season in 2016. Arrested Development features a wealthy family of flawed characters and questionable morals while mocking conservatives.

1. The Similarities between Gob Bluth and Jeb Bush
Gob Bluth is the eldest son of the  Bluth family. He is a failed magician and an embarrassment to most of his family. Gob Bluth rides around on a Segway, constantly brags about his expensive suits, and commonly uses “forget-me-now(s)” (roofies/rohypnol) to erase his shame brought on by his questionable actions. Gob Bluth, a name he is commonly mocked for, stands for George Oscar Bluth (Bluth). His name is shockingly similar to Jeb Bush or John Ellis Bush (Bush). The similarities between Jeb and Gob don’t stop there.

By making Gob a joke, Arrested Development consistently mocks Jeb Bush. For example, during much of the series Gob tries to find his identity apart from simply being a Bluth. However, his limited success and all of his money comes from his family’s name and fortune. Gob is given a job as “President” at the Bluth Company, but does nothing other than make life harder for his more responsible and knowledgable younger brother Michael. Similarly, Jeb Bush uses his family’s name as a crutch while attempting to convince the American population that he is his “own person” and not just another failed Bush.

Jeb Bush has also even been pictured riding a Segway, inviting the comparison to be made.

2. “Accidentally” Aiding Iraq and Terrorists
In the beginning of Arrested Development, Bluth family’s patriarch, George Bluth, is being investigated on treason charges. The Bluth company makes very shoddily built model homes. The government is led to believe that George Bluth committed treason by aiding Saddam Hussein by allowing him to hide in those model homes. While the charges are eventually resolved, the Bluth’s questionable relationships with Iraq are strikingly familiar to the Bush family’s.

Similarly, George Bush’s decisions in response to 9/11 ended up supporting terrorists and aided in the creation of ISIS in Iraq.

3. Lucille Bluth Is Basically Donald Trump In A Skirt
Lucille Bluth is the wife to George Senior Bluth and the mother of the Bluth siblings. She is an over the top racist, a snob, an alcoholic, and a terrible mother. Lucille is also immoral and incredibly judgmental. She is undoubtedly the worst human being in the show and is constantly insulting people in insane ways. The similarities between Lucille Bluth and Donald Trump are striking. The internet has made this mockery a game: Who Said It Lucille or Trump– and it is legitimately hard to tell the difference. Lucille treats her Mexican housekeeper like she is less than human, attempts to cancel Cinco de Mayo, and even adopts a Korean boy, who she doesn’t bother learning the name of, to teach her children a lesson. Lastly, Lucille Bluth legitimately advocates for a wall between the USA and Mexico just like Trump has.

4. Herbert Love
Arrested Development mocks conservatives even further when Herbert Love is introduced as a right-wing politician running for Congress in Season 4. The Bluth family uses their money and influence to convince Love to back the wall between the USA and Mexico. When the wall no longer coincides with the Bluth’s interests, Love agrees to change his beliefs if they give him $40,000 and, in doing so, mocks conservatives and the fact that their beliefs are intertwined with those who pay them a lot of money.

During a very awkward dinner, Herbert Love also mentions his “hi-low plan,” a plan to tax the rich less and the poor more. Even though Herbert Love is over the top he reflects a lot of the insane policies and problems that commonly come from the Republican Party.
