A New, Dangerous High: Teens Are ‘Butt Chugging’ This Household Substance

Butt chugging is not a pretty topic. At. All. However it is a subject parents need to be aware of.  In February 2000, Three 6 Mafia released, “Sippin On Some Syrup” and the rap song became a fast hit. It glamorized drinking cough syrup for a quick buzz. You know the kids were listening! Popular culture movies and music tend to glorify getting high.

Sit Up In My Classroom, Sleep At Home!

I used to teach summer school. Although I was used to high school and college classrooms, I figured I could handle seventh graders for a month. One kid couldn’t stay awake for our half day sessions.  He was overly sleepy (high) every morning, and the culprits were obvious.  Rap lyrics taken literally, 13 year-old teen stupidity, and cough syrup.

Enemas Provide A Quick High

Fast forward to 2015.  The new trend still involves cough syrup but it’s administered to the opposite end. Hence the title: Butt Chugging.  According to The Racket Report, over the counter cough syrup (like Robitussin) is given to willing participants as an enema. When administered anally, cough syrup is absorbed into the bloodstream quicker.  Hence the reasons kids may try it. Butt chugging produces a quicker high, and parents won’t be tipped off by alcohol on their teen’s breath.

Risks Of Butt Chugging Cough Syrup

We’ve all done really stupid things as teenagers, whether it be a dare, the urge to try something new, or blindly following the group leader. As usual, adults don’t understand what makes teens want to try such risky behaviour. And this activity is full of risk: butt chugging can result in seizures, hallucinations, dizziness, disorientation, and motor skill damage. Some pretty serious stuff.

Communication With Teens Is The Ultimate Holiday Gift

Parents and other concerned adults, you’ve been informed. Make some time between mall runs and wrapping gifts to really talk with the teens in your life. Yes, you’re encouraged to open the door and have an awkward but important conversation.  Butt chugging cough syrup, alcohol, or anything else in an effort to get high needs to be discussed.
