Sam’s Club CEO Calls For More Diversity, Enraged White People Lose Their Sh*t


After her interview with Poppy Harlow of CNN Money, Sam’s Club CEO Rosalind Brewer received some backlash for a comment she made when asked about diversity in the workplace. As a result, Brewer is being called a racist and sexist because she allegedly hates white men.

Last week, Harlow sat down with Brewer to discuss various issues, including her company’s commitment to continued minimum wage increases, fair and equitable pay, and paid family leave.

Harlow then switched the topic to diversity. Harlow commented about how Brewer is “a rarity in the corner office in America” since Brewer is not only a Black CEO, but also a woman at the helm of such a large corporation. Harlow pointed out this is something so many want to see changed: diverse leaders in corporate America. She then questioned Brewer about what needs to be done to make this happen — to see more women like her be represented in the “top eschelon’s of corporate America.” Brewer responded,

“It starts with top leadership…my team is very diverse, I make that a priority. I demand it of my team…and every now and then you have to nudge your partners and speak up and speak out and I try to use my platform for that…I try to set an example; I mentor many women inside my company and outside the company because I think it’s important.”

When Poppy asked her if she demands this when hiring for the company’s top spots, Brewer noted that this is something she has to demand of her suppliers. She stated:

Just today we met with a supplier and on their side of the table was all Caucasian males.

As a result of the suppliers lack of females present at this meeting, Brewer expressed her desire to talk to her supplier about this.

From these statements, critics allege that Brewer is advocating “against employing and hiring white men.” They have accused her of being a racist and a sexist. Some are even calling for a boycott of Sam’s Club.

The people calling Brewer a racist or sexist are simply ignorant. She did not say in the interview that she wanted only minorities or only women, instead Brewer wants to see diversity — as do most normal people. Brewer was merely taken back that her supplier only had white men attend a meeting and was disturbed that there were no women, regardless of race.

What Brewer said in the CNN interview was empowering for both women and minorities. When are these crazy right-wingers going to understand that diversity is important and essential to move forward and leave behind this nonsensical bigotry?
