Earlier this week, Robertson and his Christian Broadcasting Network may have established themselves as the biggest cheerleaders for Trump’s out-and-out Islamophobia–even though most of us in the reality-based world know that it has taken on a fundamentally un-American cast.

Robertson himself got in on the act on Tuesday. To those who think that banning Muslim immigration amounts to a religious test, Robertson replied that Islam isn’t a religion, but a political system bent on taking over the world. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.

Apparently CBN’s chief political correspondent, David Brody, took this as one of the biggest prompts that he has ever received from his boss. Brody took to his blog, the Brody File, to suggest that Trump may have his biggest opportunity yet to reach out to social conservatives. As Brody sees it, Trump should use his campaign to start “a deeper discussion” about why Islamist thugs oppose “our way of life. To that end, Brody thinks Trump should speak out about the “underlying theological problems” present in Islam–and really has nothing to lose by doing so.

“Well, the truth is radical Islamists do indeed want to establish a global caliphate where everyone lives under Muslim rule. But he can’t leave it there. He has an opportunity to shed light in this area because he has such a huge powerful megaphone. Will he do it? Can he do it? Once again, if he can’t (and he will be the first to admit that he is no expert on this) then find some people that can and lead the discussion. That’s what leaders do.”

Brody goes further, saying that Trump will “lose politically” if he focuses solely on banning Muslim immigration. However, Brody thinks that if Trump focuses on Islam’s “core teachings,” it will “resonate” very strongly with evangelicals because they want to hear “the unvarnished truth” about Islam.

Before you dismiss this as just another rant from a right-wing blogger, it’s important to note that the Brody File is considered very influential among socially conservative evangelicals. Brody knows that Trump has established himself as the candidate of the tea party. However, Brody thinks that if he wants to woo away voters from Ben Carson and Ted Cruz, who seem to be the only top-tier candidates of the GOP’s social conservative faction, he needs to engage in full-fledged Islamophobia.

Granted, before this post, Brody loudly applauded Trump’s call for a ban on Muslim immigration on Twitter.

But for Brody to use his blog to call for Trump to turn his campaign into the biggest Islamophobic effort in recent memory is another matter altogether. Combine that with his boss, Robertson, saying that Islam wasn’t really a religion at all, and there can be no doubt–CBN has become Trump’s biggest cheerleader.

We already knew that Robertson was a ghost from the past. But for both he and his network to get behind such a fundamentally un-American and un-Christian shows just how fundamentally out of touch that he is.

An attempt to turn him into a member of the religious right in college only succeeded in turning him into the religious right's worst nightmare--a charismatic Christian who is an unapologetic liberal.
