Former President Jimmy Carter announced Sunday that his doctors have now informed him of a new diagnosis in his battle against cancer: Cancer-free.

President Carter made the announcement at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, where he has taught Sunday school for decades.

Jill Stuckey, who heard the former President deliver the wonderful news, reported:

“He said he got a scan this week and the cancer was gone. The church, everybody here, just erupted in applause.”

In a statement to the media, the 39th President said:

“My most recent MRI brain scan did not reveal any signs of the original cancer spots nor any new ones. I will continue to receive regular three-week immunotherapy treatments of pembrolizumab.”

In August, Carter let it be known that his doctors had discovered cancer in his liver, which had also spread to his brain, where four spots of melanoma were detected. At that time, the former President said that his fate was:

“Is in the hands of God, whom I worship.”

President Carter is currently 91 and divides his time between his home in Plains and the Carter Center in Atlanta.
