Carly Simon Reveals Who ‘You’re So Vain’ Is About

Singer Carly Simon has finally revealed the identity of the mystery playah in her iconic song “You’re So Vain.” Sort of.

The second verse is apparently about legendary ladies man Warren Beatty.

I knew it! Sort of. I actually thought the whole song was probably about him, and apparently he did, too, according to Simon. From Today:

“I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren,” she told People.

That apparently is no surprise to Beatty.

“Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!” Simon said.

You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you, goes the chorus. You’re so vain, I’ll bet you think this song is about you, don’t you, don’t you?

The verse that Simon, 70, says refers to Beatty is this one:

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive / Well you said that we made such a pretty pair / And that you would never leave / But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me / I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee / Clouds in my coffee, and…

She says that the rest of the song is about two other men, but has no plan on revealing their names anytime soon. Most people believe one of them is James Taylor, to whom she was married from 1972-1983.

Here’s the song.
