Ted Cruz Just Declared War On All Atheists, And It Was Unintentionally Hilarious

Let’s take a moment and review what we definitively know about Ted Cruz so far:

  • He is so conservative that even fellow conservatives like John McCain call him a “wacko bird.”
  • He tends to couch everything he says in terms of good versus evil.
  • He is convinced that there is a “war on Christians” taking place in the United States.
  • He thinks homosexuality is an abomination and an affront to God.

Having set those facts forward, we now have Teddy Boy going all super-duper religiousy and declaring this while campaigning in Iowa:

“Any president who doesn’t begin every day on his knees isn’t fit to be Commander-in-Chief of this nation.”

Now I grant you that Cruz didn’t mean that statement in any kind of–shall we say–less than chaste way, but you gotta admit when you consider how vehemently opposed to all matters gay the Senator is, it does cause you to chuckle out loud. It sure did me!

But here’s the much more important point: Ted Cruz is saying that there should be a religious test for anyone who wants to occupy the White House as President. Hmm…I don’t recall seeing anything in the Constitution calling for such a requirement. Probably because there is no religious test to be found in that great document.

He is also swimming against the tide. Take a look at this poll conducted by Gallup in which people were asked whether or not they would ever vote for a person of a certain religious denomination or set of beliefs:

Yes, a full 58 percent of Americans surveyed said that would indeed vote for a qualified person who happens to be an atheist. So that would seem to put Teddy in the minority on that particular issue. No doubt he thinks the poll shows this because America has already gone to hell. And hey, he should know, because he seems to radiate a certain aura of malevolence himself, does he not?

So we have some bad news for Senator Cruz: This whole pious campaign of yours is already failing and is doomed to failure in the future. Because as I’ve had to say far to many times to far too many GOP extremists, we run this country by a Constitution, not by the Bible. You can scuff up your knees as much as you want, but it will never change that fact.
