Our Financial System Is Out Of Control, And We All Know Who’s To Blame

I’m not a violent person, but sometimes I wish I could paddle the Republican Party like a strict headmaster at an old-time English boarding school. Especially in this case, because endangering our already strained financial system definitely deserves a paddlin’.

This latest bit of buffoonery by Republicans is an attempt to slip legislation that would deregulate the banks into a major highway funding bill. The move would also weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which works to protect consumers from being ripped off by banks.

Thankfully nothing bad happens when we let the banks have free reign of our economy. It’s not like we’re still pulling ourselves out of the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression. Nope, I’m sure this whole thing will work out just fine.

I don’t know if Republicans and banks get this, but in order to have a functioning financial system you need consumers to have money.

Is anyone else getting sick of this yet? Our political process was never intended to work perfectly, but this level of dysfunction is a little extreme. It’s like instead of reasonable officials we have a pack (herd? school?) of baboons running our country. Actually now that I think about it, baboons would actually be preferable. You can work with baboons, but you definitely cannot work with intensely conservative Republicans.

Thankfully, it seems like there’s a glimmer of hope. Support of these amendments is largely limited to Republicans, with just a smattering of Democrats co-sponsoring the bill.  And even if the bill does pass, it’s likely that Obama will veto it. Should that fail, we have great people in office who will try to control the banks.

I don’t know about you, but this whole situation is really making me nervous about the upcoming election. Can you imagine the havoc a conservative president could wreak with our fragile economy?

Those of you reading this do have the power to ensure things like this don’t happen. The money that politicians get from companies is used to sway the minds and hearts of the people. They’re scared of us because they need us. So let your voices be heard. Write your Congressman/Congresswoman, be informed on the issues and how candidates view them, and above else remember to vote.
