No doubt you’re wondering–how in the world can Congress even think about investigating Planned Parenthood after finding no evidence of wrongdoing? One possible explanation may have come from Jim Bakker. On Thursday’s show, Bakker and several of his guests claimed that Planned Parenthood is actually a front for devil worship and child sacrifice.

Bakker, his wife Lori, and conspiracy theorist Rick Wiles were throwing a heavy dose of red meat to their audience regarding Planned Parenthood and abortion. In the midst of the discussion, Wiles dropped a bombshell. He said that a friend of his who was once a Satanist told him that he performed “146 Satanic rituals inside of abortion clinics.” Watch here:

Wiles might as well have lit a match in a roomful of moths, because the Bakkers ate it up. Lori claimed that she’s talked to several women who were “screaming from their innermost being” after having to endure this supposed Satanic ritual. Wiles then poured more gasoline on the fire. Since murder is illegal, he said, Satanists have to find some way to conduct human sacrifices in a way that won’t raise eyebrows. Abortion, Wiles added, provides the perfect cover because it allows them to perform “human sacrifices in an abortion clinic.” Bakker declared that this was evidence that “the anti-christ spirit is loose” in this country. Since the devil knows “he can’t create,” Bakker said, “he wants to kill God’s creations.”

What evidence do Wiles and the Bakkers offer for such horrific crimes? Nothing, nada, zip, zero, bupkis. Consider that Wiles believes that Obama is demon possessed and Bakker thinks radical Muslims are embedded in churches throughout this country. In both cases, they have offered no evidence whatsoever to support this. You have to remember, though, that most of their audience lives in a bubble where anything a televangelist says is taken seriously, no matter how outlandish it may be.

There are probably a lot of people both inside and outside of this country who wondered how this nonsense could have nearly caused another government shutdown. After all, the Center for Medical Progress’ videos on Planned Parenthood were comprehensively exposed for the deceptively edited hatchet jobs they were. Multiple state investigations have found no evidence of wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood. And yet, the investigations are still underway. I suspect that it’s at least in part because of claptrap like this. This is yet more proof that Bakker is even loonier now than he was in the 1980s–even if he isn’t breaking the law.
