While speaking at a campaign appearance in New Hampshire earlier this week, Ben Carson, who is a doctor, went on a bizarre rant that ranged across topics such as gravity, science, and climate change.

Asked about his thoughts on climate change, here’s what Dr. Carson said:

“Is there climate change? Of course there’s climate change. Any point in time, temperatures are going up or temperatures are going down. Of course that’s happening. When that stops happening, that’s when we’re in big trouble.”

Uh, actually, Dr. Carson, what you just described would be the weather pattern, which we all realize is subject to change from day to day or even moment to moment. But that’s quite different than climate change. And science shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that global temperatures are rising at an unprecedented rate.

Then the good doctor decided to shift gears and discuss evolution, remarking:

“As far as evolution is concerned, you know, I do believe in micro-evolution, or natural selection, but I believe that God gave the creatures he made the ability to adapt to their environment. Because he’s very smart and he didn’t want to start over every 50 years.”

So what about the dinosaurs? They weren’t able to adapt to their environment and became extinct. How do you explain that, Ben? And if you believe in natural selection but reject all other tenets of evolution, isn’t that kind of like saying you believe in God, but you’re not certain, so you’re gonna embrace atheism, too?

But by far the strangest part of what Carson said can be found in this free-form statement he made:

“The way the earth rotates on its axis, how far away it is from the sun. These are all very complex things. Gravity, where did it come from? I mean, there are so many things. So I don’t denigrate the people who say ‘Eh, eh, whatever, somehow it happened.’ I don’t denigrate them. I just don’t have that much faith.”

Where did gravity come from? Didn’t this guy go to med school? Did he manage to graduate without learning the basics of physics? Hey, Doc, you might wanna look into a guy named Isaac Newton. Google it and get back to me.

Please also realize that in recent polls, Ben Carson is firmly in second place, just behind Donald Trump. And yet the Republicans wonder why they cannot win national elections. It’s almost as big a mystery to them as gravity.
