Bill Maher: Trump Is Perfect Candidate For Republicans Who Worship ‘Supply-Side Jesus’

Full disclosure: I am a huge fan of Bill Maher. I watch his HBO show Real Time With Bill Maher each and every week. Sometimes I even watch at replay of it later in the week. So it should be no surprise that I could not wait to share his latest comments on Donald Trump and the GOP with Liberal America readers.

Maher began by saying there really are two Americas, and now, thanks to Trump, there are also two versions of Jesus on the modern political landscape.

Liberals, Maher said, worshiped the traditional version of Jesus, while Republicans have created their very own “supply-side Jesus,” who he described as:

“A small businessman from Galilee whose main gripe is big government who wants to make Nazareth great again. He’d love to help the less fortunate — but he’s got investors to think about.”

A perfect example of this new supply-side Jesus, Maher said, can be seen in the predatory actions of someone like Martin Shkreli, who tried to raise the price of Daraprim, a drug used by both AIDS and cancer patients, to $750 a pill before he finally changed his mind in response to public criticism. The pharmaceutical companies, Maher observed, are every much a cartel as the ones you see in Mexico:

“This cartel owns the US government every bit as much as Mexican drug lords own theirs.”

Also, Trump’s choice of reading material is indicative of this new religious movement taking place in the GOP:

“He says — he does — that his two favorite books are the Bible and The Art Of The Deal. Trump says one is about a perfect God who teaches humanity the right way to live. And the other is the Bible.”

Personally, I think Bill Maher just described the modern Republican party perfectly. They want to claim they’re religious, but their god is the Almighty Dollar.
