Abused Pit Bull With No Ears Gets Second Chance At Life

A pit bull is getting a rare second chance at life after being adopted by a woman from a Los Angeles city animal shelter.

When Nana was dropped off at the shelter over two years ago in 2013, her body spoke the tale of abuse she had suffered through life. Her body showed that she was bred most likely over 15 times with a low-hanging belly and nipples. She also had no teeth and no ears. Vets believe an owner pulled her teeth, or it resulted from self-inflicted injury from being confined to a cage. They estimated she was around eight years old.

When adopted, her ears, full of fungus and polyps, had to be removed including her ear canals. The vets also guessed that was the result of a botched cut job by amateur backyard veterinarian surgeons. They offer no antibiotics and most of the time no anesthetic. If they do provide anesthetic, they are far from qualified to use it. There are plenty of those around here in my local area that do this. In a cheap attempt to look tough, she’s now deaf. I’m not making a judgement on ear cutting here. If you are going to do it, however, have it done by a professional.

However, Nana’s new owner, Stephanie Doris, says that thanks to Nana’s forgiving nature, she’s able to forgive the humans herself.

“Even though I will never understand why or how they would treat a dog like that, especially a dog as sweet, as innocent, and as gentle as Nana, I am thankful they surrendered her. Otherwise, she would not be with me now. She has forgiven humans and, in a sense, I have forgiven too.”

Doris doesn’t know why she felt pushed to adopt a dog, much less a pit bull.

“To this day, I cannot explain what sparked me to impulsively apply to foster her. What I do know, though, is that it was one of the best decisions I have made.”

Nana now lives in a pleasant home in Nevada helping Doris study for medical school.

“I bet she’s glad she can’t hear because I continually lecture her on different subjects to help myself learn. She acts like she cares but really, she’s thinking about her next snack.”
