Do you get the feeling that maybe, just maybe, all this running for President stuff has finally taken its toll on Donald Trump?
I ask that question because earlier today at the so-called Values Voters summit, Trump, attempting to woo the Christian fundamentalists whose votes he knows he will need, waved a Bible around and then made a dubious promise to them.
First, let’s address the Bible: Trump held up a Bible that he claimed his grandmother gave him as a boy, pointing to his name and childhood address written inside. Apparently he thinks this makes up for the fact that he refused to name a favorite Bible verse when asked to do so by a reporter in August. This prompted social media to create a special #TrumpBible for him. Just so you know, it’s hilarious!
And then Trump hit the high note the crowd had been craving. He talked about religious liberty in the United States and said he fears there has been an erosion of it in recent years:
“The word Christmas, I love Christmas. You go to stores, you don’t see the word ‘Christmas.’ It says ‘happy holidays’ all over. I say, ‘where’s Christmas?’”
But wait, he’s just getting warmed up, and he followed with this bit of patented Trump fakery:
“I tell my wife, don’t go to those stores. I want to see Christmas. You know, other people can have their holidays, but Christmas is Christmas. I want to see ‘Merry Christmas.’ Remember the expression, ‘Merry Christmas?’ You don’t see it anymore. You’re going to see it if I get elected, I can tell you that right now.”
Of course, His Trumpness did not specify how he would make stores obey his dictate, but no doubt he has a position paper coming out on it real soon, just like all the other ones he’s been promising but has yet to deliver.
As for not seeing “Merry Christmas,” you have to be living in a cave somewhere in the frozen tundra to miss the endless advertising that features it every year beginning in about July. Seems like they move it up a few weeks every year.
But this is Trump World, where logic and proportion hold no sway. Just say it and it will become reality. The worst part: I’m pretty sure the folks in that room couldn’t even tell he was pandering to them.
