Stephen Colbert wasted no time last night on the Late Show. His first guest was none other than the current GOP frontrunner, Donald Trump, and no sooner had the Donald sat down than Colbert started him off with this:

“I’m gonna throw you up a big fat meatball for you to hit out of the park right now. This is the last time you ever have to address this question if you hit the ball. Barack Obama: born in the United States?”

No doubt you recall that in 2012 Trump was all over the airwaves, offering millions of dollars in reward money to anyone who could produce President Obama’s birth certificate or prove the President was not an American citizen despite his having been born in Hawaii, which just so happens to be a state.

This time, however, Trump passed on the opportunity to impugn the President’s citizenship, which led Colbert to exclaim:

“It’s a meatball! It’s hanging out there!”

Finally the Donald relented and said:

“I don’t talk about it anymore. I talk about jobs, I talk about our veterans being horribly treated. I just don’t discuss it anymore”

But Colbert would not relent, and he told Trump:

“You know that meatball is now being dragged down the steps of the subway by a rat right now. You missed the meatball.”

Again, Trump tried to change the subject:

“I’m talking about the vets, who are treated like third-class citizens. They’re treated worse than the illegals. The vets of this country are so mistreated.”

Yes, Donald, the vets are being so mistreated that you decided to hitch your wagon to a questionable group called Veterans for a Strong America which boasts one member and a total operating budget of $30. You’ll forgive us if we don’t believe you, Donald, but you spew out so much bullcrap that we cannot separate out the few tiny nuggets of truth that might be embedded.

Colbert also thanked Trump for running for President because of the comedy material he provides:

“I’m not going to say this stuff writes itself, but you certainly do deliver it on time every day.”
