While he was speaking at the White House earlier today, Pope Francis happened to bring up the subject of climate change and said:

“Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our common home, we are living at a critical moment of history.”

But from the way Fox Business host Stuart Varney reacted, you would have thought the Pope had just told everyone to go worship Satan and burn down the Vatican. Varney, looking as if he had just been slapped in the face, declared:

“I believe the pope just walked right into the politics of climate change with a full-throated statement. It was politics, was is not? I was surprised at such an overt statement, which I thought was political statement of support for the president, President Obama, on climate change. I didn’t think that would include things like, ‘I approve of your initiative to reduce air pollution… It seems clear that climate change is a problem… It is time to change… This climate change is powerfully striking our home and our cities.’”

It is instructive to know that this is the same Stuart Varney who has called climate change “nonsense” on more than one occasion.

Varney was just getting started with his rant, also saying:

“It is extraordinary that right from the get-go, a papal visit to the United States, the first time this pope has been in America, we go right into climate change. One would have thought that maybe there are things to talk about, like the persecution and slaughter of tens of thousands of Christians in North Africa.”

Oh, so now you think you have the moral gravitas to tell the Pope what topics he should speak on, Stuart? You’re just a talking head hack who has a made a career defending the interests of big business. Do you truly believe that gives you the right to call out Pope Francis?

And Varney also added this slice of angry ignorance while he had the stage:

“Where’s the statement about saving my soul? The holy father is in the United States of America, a minister to my soul, the soul of all Catholics, all Christians. Come on!”

There are few things more ridiculous than listening to a man who has no god other than the Almighty Dollar attempt to lecture a true man of God. Hey, Stuart, put a sock in it!
