Some strange things turn up in the news on a daily basis, but I have to admit this is one the flat-out most bathshit weird and crazy ones that I’ve encountered in quite a long time.

Kathleen Tonn, a former Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, showed up Tuesday night at the Anchorage, Alaska, assembly. The assembly is currently considering an LGBT rights ordinance.

Tonn, carrying a briefcase stuffed with props, began her speech with this opening, which could easily have come from a play by Samuel Beckett and the Theater of the Absurd:

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. You like my trumpet? It’s a sound heard around the world.”

Ms. Tonn then pulled a Bible from out of her briefcase. The assembly chairman asked for Tonn to spell her name for the record. Safe to say he was taken aback when she replied:

“Tonn as in a ton of sin, a ton of judgment. Since one of my brethren introduced the King James Bible, since I represent the Lord Jesus Christ the great I am, I’m going to add to your public document and your public record from the public document of the great I am.”

Uh……OK……..Check, please!

The apparently deranged Tonn then pulled out a tampon from her Bible and declared:

“Starting with, oh my — a tampon. Reminds me that little girls in pubescence get periods — female girls.”

What in the hell is she talking about? Anyone? Anyone have any idea at all?

Finally, Tonn told the bewildered assembly:

“Now, since you want to create some ordinance to avoid discrimination for members of our community who engage in, I perceive, unhealthy, ungodly behavior, you might want to consider creating an ordinance for one who speaks in tongues.”

To which assembly chair Dick Traini replied:

“Ma’am, your time is up. Thank you for your testimony.”

Just as a friendly FYI and momentary return to sanity, the ordinance would prohibit discrimination against any person based on their sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, public accommodations, and housing. An amendment may also be proposed that would allow individuals, businesses, or organizations to claim a religious grounds for discriminating against LGBT people.

And as for Kathleen Tonn: The folks in the spaceship you came from say they’re ready to take you back to your home planet. KT, phone home!
