You may recall that last week, when Kim Davis was released from jail after spending the weekend there on contempt charges, she dropped in on a rally Mike Huckabee organized in support of her. The Rowan County, Kentucky clerk took the stage to the strains of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.” However, the band was hopping mad that Huckabee and Davis’ camps had swiped their 1982 hit, best known as the theme from “Rocky III.” They’re seriously considering filing a lawsuit. Well, Huckabee appears to be throwing the others who organized the rally, as well as Davis, under the bus.
TMZ caught up with Huckabee yesterday while he was at the airport to get his thoughts on the matter. His response? In so many words, “Not my fault.” Watch here. Huckabee claimed that he had nothing to do with the choice of Davis’ entrance music, and that he had no knowledge that licensed music was being swiped.
Really, Mike? You expect anyone to believe that you had no knowledge of the logistics of a rally that you organized and fronted? You expect anyone to believe you had no control over a rally that you used as a fundraising magnet? You expect anyone to believe you had no control over this rally when you claimed to have people on the ground the minute you learned Davis had been held in contempt and ordered to jail? Don’t insult our intelligence.
I’d pay money to see if Huckabee tried to peddle this excuse in court if Survivor did indeed sue him. If he did, Survivor’s attorney would eat him alive on cross. After all, if there’s anyone who thinks Huckabee can’t be held responsible for “Eye of the Tiger” being swiped at a rally that he himself trumpeted, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.
Let’s give Huckabee the benefit of the doubt, and assume that he really can’t be held responsible for this. Shouldn’t he have known that something like this would happen when he partnered with the National Organization for Marriage, an outfit with a history of disregard for copyright? Plus, I’m pretty sure that Davis, her husband Jim, and her lawyers at Liberty Counsel would love to know that Huckabee is fobbing responsibility off on them.
Huckabee has tacitly admitted that, at the very least, he’s disengaged in a way that would do George W. Bush proud. When that’s the best-case scenario, it says a lot about the kind of person Huckabee is.
