AZ Mom Discovers Son’s School Is Putting Anti-Abortion Stickers In Science Textbooks

Suzanne Young recently moved to Gilbert County, Arizona, with her family, and was shocked when her son brought home his high-school biology textbook and told his mother that the school had made all the students in his class place a sticker in their books. Here is what Ms. Young posted on Twitter:

Is this a sex education class? Nope. It’s a high school biology course. And it turns out this sticker was a compromise: The Gilbert County School Board had originally wanted to cut the pages dealing with abortion out of every textbook in the county. What’s next? Burning books you disagree with?

Suzanne Young wasted no time excoriating the school system on social media:

“I don’t care what your religion is or if you think abstinence education works, that sticker crosses the line for public school.”

“I wonder how the girls felt about it in class. I would have refused.”

“It’s SCIENCE! According to the majority religion in your area.”

But what happened in Arizona is part of a much larger movement by conservatives in this country as they attempt to deny science on issues ranging from climate change to the theory of evolution. Recently, a sexual education researcher sat in on her son’s sex ed class wound up live-tweeting the bizarre mix of lies, misinformation, and propaganda that were being presented as fact.

I have no problem at all with someone believing differently than I do. If you don’t think global warming is real, that’s your decision. But when you try to push your science-denying ignorance onto my child, you have just raised my hackles in a major way.

The basic facts of science are not open to interpretation. And my daughter’s mind is not an experimental petri dish where some right wing extremist can attempt to plant the seeds of his or her right wing propaganda. Truth is truth, and that is never-changing.

These narrow-minded Luddites need to leave their politics at the schoolhouse door.
