The Demise Of Democracy

Oligarchy – a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.

Democracy – a system of government in which power is vested in the people, who rule either directly or through freely elected representatives.

Which of these do you think the United States has become?

Oligarchy is the right answer and it’s hard to disagree. In a study conducted by Princeton University, Martin Gilens found that “ordinary citizens have virtually no influence over what their government does.” That doesn’t mean a small government, it means take the money out of politics.

Even former United States President Jimmy Carter seems to think the answer is an oligarchy.

Carter and Giles both conclude that America is run by economic elites and self-interest groups that are focused on profit instead of it’s people.

And if we can learn anything from the likes of Abraham Lincoln, it is that “Government of the people, by the people, for the people” is what this country is about. Not a government run by big business and the 1%.
