Joe Biden is a nice guy. Even Republicans like him. But what do we know about the man?

He was a Senator representing Delaware for 36 years. Obviously, the people of Delaware believed he was doing a good job. President Obama chose him as vice president and has used him as a negotiator for dealing with Congress. It is safe to say Joe Biden is experienced in working with the federal government.

He appears to be a true democrat, in that he supports liberal causes, such as LGBT rights, gun control, and nationalized health care (also popularly known as Obamacare).

Joe Biden appears to be habitually honest. This is probably why he and President Obama have such a good relationship. It is hard enough to find this trait amidst the general population. Finding it in a politician is truly rare. While many politicians could be classified as psychopaths (comfortable lying, minimal ethics), Joe Biden is not one of them. His habitual honesty also explains his gaffs. Anyone who speaks honestly is going to periodically put his foot in his mouth, not in an evil way, but in an embarrassing way. (As when he forced President Obama to take a stand on LGBT rights, quite possibly opening the door for the Supreme Court decision.)

According to current and former aids, the relationship between President Obama and Biden has grown stronger with each passing year. Their relationship has been made stronger by the friendship that developed between their wives, Michelle and Jill. Mr. Biden made their relationship clear when he asked the President to give the eulogy at his son’s funeral. Early on the two men agreed to be flatly honest with each other and to express their opinions openly.

While his periodic gaffes and the large friendly smile may create the image of a fumbling fool, it would be a serious mistake to classify him as one. He has 36 years of continuous support from his home state, has extensive overseas experience, and has negotiated with Republicans who have expressed their contempt for our first black president on numerous occasions. As Obama’s vice president, Joe Biden has focused largely on foreign policy and economic issues.

For his state, Mr. Biden has worked to develop Delaware’s “favorable corporate climate” (curiously, Delaware has the second-highest corporate income tax in the nation), and has legislated against domestic violence and crafted an anti-crime bill, putting 100,000 more cops on the nation’s streets. His work has helped to ban assault weapons and create tougher penalties for drug dealers. His foreign policy work is extensive, and Senator Biden allegedly called the Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, a war criminal to his face during a visit to Belgrade in 1993.

All in all, Joe Biden is worth considering for the position of President of the United States. He is experienced, honest, and an intelligent, thoughtful, middle-leaning liberal. Then all we need to do is get rid of a Republican controlled Congress that seems to hate everyone who isn’t rich.
