Twitter’s Amazing Response To Abby Wambach And Her Gay Kiss

Twitter’s amazing response to the emotional, and pride inducing, kiss between Abby Wambach and her wife Sarah Huffman caught me off guard. For one, I was expecting a backlash of homophobic remarks and ignorance from this powerful, instant reaction social media source. Second, I was more than surprised to see who actually sent their praise to the team.

For those in the dark, on Sunday July 5, 2015, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team won its third World Cup by defeating Japan 5-2. In a rematch of the 2011 World Cup Finals that resulted in a loss to boot. No pun intended.

Immediately after the victory, U.S. women’s soccer legend Abby Wambach ran towards the crowd and embraced her wife of two years, and planted a great big kiss on her. It was a moment that captured everything America stood for. Pride, teamwork, dedication, and acceptance, just to name a few.

After the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that allows same-sex marriage in all 50 states, this seemed like the perfect way to show the world that America is truly the “land of the free.”

Shortly after though, I could just imagine the hateful tweets and assorted posts that would come. While some of those appeared scattered here and there, the majority of the tweets blew me away. Here are just a few of the positive responses.

Now a few of the responses seemed a little puzzling. Especially because they came from politicians that are in stern opposition to same-sex marriage. I know some of the trolls will say ?we’re not saying you can’t represent the U.S. in sports because your gay, we just don’t want it to go against our Christian beliefs if you try to get married.? That line of thinking in any way, shape, or form, is a crock. Don’t start with the cherry picking. No pun intended… again.

This is not a religious issue. This is a civil issue. The civil right in today’s society to marry the one you love. Regardless of gender. Go ahead and spit out the Bible verses you say are against it. The ones you say we all should live by. Just be ready to live by the Bible verses we can spit right back. I doubt any of the haters could handle that kind of love and discipline Jesus talked about.

So without further ado, here is the Republican double standard in action.

Yes Jeb, it was a fitting end to the 4th of July weekend. When gay and straight women pulled together as one, and brought America together. A weekend in which we celebrate freedom from oppression. Both religious and otherwise. So congratulations #USWNT, and thank you Abby Wambach!
