Republicans Candidates’ Futures Trading On The Name Of Jesus

I’ve often wondered why so many people from Mexico and regions south name their kids ?Jesus? (pronounced HEY-SOOS.) That sounds really good.

Anonimous

When it comes to the 50 states, naming your kid Jesus (pronounced GEE-zus ? at least in Kansas) seems rather sacreligeous. The Bible told me so. Okay, I lied, the Bible didn’t tell me so. However,?I’m not alone. When is the last time you heard a mother call out, “Where are you Jesus Schwertfeger or Jesus Klingenknocker??

Jesus And His Own Name

What does Jesus think of his own name? Just look at his selfies. Would Jesus think, ?I’m the Prince of Peace,? and hold that thought as a European paints his likeness? Or would he in a 2015 visualization see himself as the ?Lamb of God,? then shoot himself with a camera, aka cell phone?

Republican Futures Trading On ‘Jesus’

Of course politicians use Jesus in self-serving ways? Here are a few of the multitude of Republican candidates:

  • Jeb Bush: “Jesus would be a perfect Republican.” I would have to agree. He might be the only perfect Republican, though.
  • Ted Cruz: “It is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.” It sounds to me, Ted, as if you’re saying – none of your business!
  • Rand Paul: “I don’t think Jesus would have killed anyone, or condoned killing, perhaps not even in self-defence.” That’s a relief, Rand.
  • Mike Huckabee: “In every person’s life the only thing that makes life truly worth living the next day is knowing that that emptiness is filled by the Lord Jesus Christ.” Jesus as a filler. Well who am I to criticize – after all Mike is a minister.
  • Carly Fiorini: “It is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.” I’ve heard that before…now who said that.? Oh yeah, Ted.
  • Rick Perry: ?Right now, America is in crisis: we have been besieged by financial debt, terrorism, and a multitude of natural disasters. As a nation, we must come together and call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles, and thank Him for the blessings of freedom we so richly enjoy.?

Wow, that’s kind of depressing, Rick. Although in all fairness, when I try to come up with all my freedoms, that’s pretty depressing to me.

Jesus As Who We Want

Maybe we have made Jesus into what we want him to be. Clearly He was Jewish. But look at his pictures ? we rarely see a Jewish man. ?Most people, including scholars, agree that Jesus was born, he lived, and he died in a Jewish world.

As the U.S. slides ever more quickly into the color beige, the differentation between race and religion seem to matter less and less. The sharp divide between Jews and Christians is eroding ? ironically with much thanks to the conservative Christian right.

Done In Jesus? Name

How would Jesus feel about what we have done in his name? Certainly people have done some horrid things all in Jesus? name, which seems contradictory. These are just a few:

  • The Crusades – the 11th to the 13th century where Europe is trying to stop the Muslim Conquests.
  • The Inquisition – ever preventing heresy, you know like being Protestant and getting tortured until you weren’t.
  • Martin Luther inciting his followers to burn synagogues.
  • Sports teams – Jesus deciding which team wins, and which is obliterated.

Well I certainly do not have all the answers, but I do prefer Jesus as the “Embodiment of Love” – because I definitely do need him in that role!
