Key and Peele Push The Envelope With New Sketch: ‘Negrotown’

From Key and Peele, the same comedians that brought us President Obama’s “Anger Translator” comes “Negrotown,” a world where people of color live without the burden of systemic racism.

The new season of Comedy Central’s “Key & Peele Show” doesn’t premiere until July 8, but Jordan Peele just couldn’t wait to release this new sketch.?The duo respond to recent protests of police brutality against people of color by imagining a world in which they walk down the street unharmed, taxis stop for them, and no one tries to make them their “token black friend.”

WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE

The sketch has received early praise from sites like theroot.com, which notes:

“Negrotown is every black person’s dream come true. You’re not harassed on the streets by cops. You can get your home loan approved. Plus, it even has dating benefits for black women: There are no white women around to take all the black men.”

While the sketch is funny, the sentiment behind it is sobering. How often do we as white folks consider the privilege we have in not being positioned as objects of fear or being stereotyped as “thugs” and gang members due to the color of our skin? How often do we recognize that the privileges dreamed about by people of color?in this sketch are not simply a dream for us?

Here’s hoping that the “Key & Peele Show” continues to push the envelope, shine a spotlight on culture, and bring on the?funny!
