An Oklahoma mother who complained about Bibles being given away in?the public schools says she and her family will be moving after receiving numerous threats from other parents for her actions.
The woman, identified only as Lea, is an atheist, and she contacted the?American Humanist Association last month when her son informed her that his third-grade teacher handed out copies of the Bible in class, a clear violation of the separation of church and state.
Lea said her children–a son and daughter–have faced bullying over their agnostic beliefs in the six years they have been living in Duncan, Oklahoma. Her daughter was even called a “devil worshipping lesbian transvestite whore.”
But when Lea complained about the Bible distribution, she said the intensity of the harassment against her children intensified to the point where she feared for their safety:
?I began to fear for mine and my son’s safety when I read ?run her out of town? and ?snitches end up in ditches. I have the comments in an email, but I’d have to go through hundreds of comments to find them. I feared for my son when the parents all had their kids carry their Bibles to school one day, to prove a point.?Kids are mean. I couldn’t let my son face that kind of ridicule for not having a Bible.?
Lea also said what makes her even angrier is that the parents and children who have said such hateful things to her and her children claim to be Christians and also say they are the victims in the disagreement. She added:
?The town hates me, but I’ve noticed that Duncan, Oklahoma, has one of the worst persecution complexes I have ever seen ? anywhere.”
