CDC Warning: Ebola Spreads In Unexpected Ways

Oh great, it isn’t bad enough that a person catches Ebola?and miraculously recovers, now they can’t have sex either! Well they can if they can find a partner willing to take the risk of catching Ebola, too. Not likely.

The?Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?(CDC)?revised its?guidelines on Ebola transmission. According to the New York Times, the CDC is telling Ebola survivors to,

?Abstain from all forms of sex or use?condoms?every time ?until more information becomes available,? rather than three months as previously recommended.?

Researchers found Ebola in semen of a man 175 days after a Liberian man originally developed symptoms and infected his sexual partner.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention revised its guidelines and issued this warning:

?Ebola survivors should practice safe sex indefinitely?after it discovered new evidence that the virus could survive in semen for many months. The World Health Organization and Liberia have issued similar warnings.?

Ebola researcher at the CDC Philip Ireland, Stuart Nichol caught Ebola when he was working at the John F. Kennedy Medical Research Center in the capital of Liberal. Nichol said,

?The problem is we haven’t looked at a large number of cases. Tests have to be made available, and have to be made next-to-free.?

Experts thought that sexual transmission would be rare. But now the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO), and Sierra Leone health ministry are planning a study of Ebola survivors. They will measure the length of time Ebola survives in semen, urine, breast milk, and other bodily fluids.

It makes me wonder if researchers should extrapolate this new information to other serious contagious diseases?
