A cell phone video has surfaced showing a teacher at high school in Memphis, Tennessee, putting a 16-year-old student in a chokehold. And as if that’s not bad enough, the student placed in the chokehold also suffers from asthma and has problems breathing.
When an altercation took place at Northeast Prep between two male students, the teacher jumped in to stop the fight, but the way he handled the matter has raised more than a few eyebrows among parents who have children at the school.
The video clearly shows that even after the fight had ended, the teacher placed one student in a chokehold and slammed him to the ground. One of the students involved in the scuffle said the teacher used the chokehold after he had already left the room.
Shunkita Qualls, the mother of the asthmatic student,?says her son suffered bruises on his neck and arms:
?(It was) heartbreaking. It brought tears to my eyes.?No mother wants to send their child to school and have to see something like that. The other boy in the video clearly states he walked out of the room, so there’s no reason to slam him on the ground, none of that, choke him, my son has asthma. He said while he was on the ground, he can’t breathe, he’s calm.?
The Shelby County School ?District issued a statement which partially supports the teacher’s actions:
?We are aware a fight took place yesterday between two students. This fight resulted in a teacher, attempting to break up the melee. School security and administrators have reviewed the video and felt that the actions taken by the teacher were used to prevent the student from retaliating against the other student.?
The two students who were fighting have been suspended from school for a week. Qualls has also filed a police complaint against the teacher who used the chokehold. But it remains unclear if the teacher in question will be disciplined in any manner. He is still teaching at Northeast Prep.
