WATCH As A Tennessee GOP Lawmaker Says Guns Are As Safe As Bicycles

Every now and then you run across something so amazingly absurd that it catches your eye and practically begs you to read it. And this story certainly got my attention.

Tennessee?State Republican Representative?Glen Casada has proposed a bill in the legislature which would?repeal the ban on guns in city parks. I don’t know about you, but I certainly feel the need to pack some major heat whenever I decide to go visit a park because some of the squirrels can get downright aggressive.

Casada, in an interview with a Tennessee newspaper reporter, said gun ownership is a right guaranteed by the Constitution and it’s the “state’s obligation to guarantee the constitutional rights? of its citizens. But when the reporter reminded Casada of the danger from an accident with a gun in a public park, Tennessee Rambo came back with this:

“There’s accidents with bicycles in parks. Should we outlaw bicycles??

No, but something tells me we should outlaw the election of stupid men who make ridiculous comparisons between guns and bicycles. In which case, my dear Mr. Casada, you would be guilty as homemade sin.

The reporter, realizing the ludicrous parallel Casada had just made, pressed him by presenting the case that bicycles almost never result in the death of human beings. Again, Casada spooned up some more stupidity:

?That’s not true, I disagree with that statement.”

Once again the reporter tried to give Casada a chance to retract his thesis, and told the Representative:

?Guns are weapons. Are you saying a gun is as safe as bicycle??

Casada dug in his heels and retorted:

?If used properly I am. If used properly.”

Hoping to clarify Casada’s moronic position on the gun/bicycle debate, the reporter then asked:

?In the event of an accident, which is more likely to kill someone??

Clearly annoyed by the reporter at this point, Casada says:

?Now we’re back in theoretical. I think in Tennessee we’re dealing with a lot more questions than guns in parks. I think this is a minor thing in the scope of what we’re doing good in Tennessee.?If someone gets run over by an automobile accidentally, there’s nothing I can do about that. ?These are things beyond, they’re called acts of God, they’re beyond our control.?

Oh, so now it’s God’s fault. That’s incredibly convenient. But what I find most disturbing about this exchange is how this clearly deluded man who is an elected representative of the people refuses to admit that he might just be wrong. Like so many on the right, he dares not say anything to piss off the NRA.

So the next time someone shoots up a party or robs a bank with a Schwinn mountain bike, you can call Mr. Casada a prophet. But until then, you can just call him an ignorant asshat.
