Saudi Comedian’s Parody Song Shines Light On Serious Issue

Saudi Arabian comedian Hisham Fageeh says he is not a political activist. However, his song “No Woman, No Drive,” set to the tune of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry,” brings attention to a serious issue in Saudi Arabia: the sexist law that prohibits women from driving.

The young comedian says he was not trying to make a big political statement with the video, though. Said Fageeh,

“My philosophy is that you do something you think is funny and hope that other people enjoy it. I’m not aiming to do anything political, just to entertain.”

That being said, he does use a style of satire similar to that of Colbert Report’s Stephen Colbert. In playing the role of the stereotypical husband/brother/father in Saudi Arabia, Fageeh makes some pointed observations about gender roles and hypocrisy in the country.

Fageeh used only his body to make this a capella song, including singing, whistling, humming, clapping, and even scratching his beard. Check out the song and video below:
